Šibenik, Dalmatia
A cathedral of stone, a fortress at sea.
The Cathedral of St James took more than a century to build, from 1431 to 1536, and it is made of stone alone: walls,
vaults and dome, slabs fitted together without wooden beams. Juraj Dalmatinac took charge in 1441, and Nikola
Firentinac finished the dome. Round the apses runs a frieze of 71 carved heads, men, women and children, each one
different. UNESCO listed the cathedral in 2000.
Out where the St Anthony Channel meets the open sea, St Nicholas Fortress has guarded the way into Šibenik's bay
since the 1540s, and joined the UNESCO list in 2017 with Venice's other defence works. Above the old town, St Michael's,
Barone and St John's fortresses look down on a maze of stone lanes in a town first mentioned at Christmas 1066.

Fabulous day trip aboard a boat for up to 11 people, with just the three of us and our skipper! [...] Swimming in different spots, each one more unusual than the last, with stops at cafés and restaurants. Unlimited cold drinks on board.

We loved this tour, which lets you discover Šibenik and its magnificent landscapes in a truly original way. The small, open-top retro car adds a lot of charm to the experience and allows you to fully enjoy the views along the way.
★★★★★
Walking through the beautiful streets of Šibenik, we felt as if we had stepped back into the Middle Ages. [...] We’ve been visiting Šibenik for several years, but now we see it through different eyes!

It was a very cool tour. Our guide was very friendly, laid-back, told us a lot, and drove to the most important spots. The time spent at the various locations was ideal, neither too long nor too short. 100% recommended.

Something different
Fly over the Čikola canyon
Not a sightseeing tour: a zipline adventure in the river canyon near Krka, for an afternoon away from the
old town. It suits families and groups as well as thrill-seekers.
An afternoon of a different kind, not far from Krka: 1.4 km of ziplines high above the Čikola river canyon, with the equipment, insurance and the transfer back to the start included.
One stone town, four fortresses, and two national parks within reach of the waterfront.
Why people come
Šibenik is the Dalmatian town people tend to find by accident and then talk about for years. Its old town climbs
from the waterfront in stone lanes and stairways to St Michael's Fortress, and the Cathedral of St James sits at the
bottom, its stone dome catching the light. It is smaller and quieter than Split, and it was here, on the cathedral
square, that Game of Thrones filmed Braavos in season 5.
The day trips are the other half of the story. Krka National Park, with the travertine cascades of Skradinski buk,
starts about 15 km inland. Out at sea, the Kornati islands form a national park of 89 islands, and closer in, Zlarin and
Prvić are a short ferry ride from the waterfront.
The old town is all steps and lanes, best seen on foot.
The fortresses, without the climb
The three fortresses tour is our pick, and its 4.8 from 94 reviews explain why: an eco tuk-tuk takes
you up to Barone, St Michael's and St John's with every entry included, and back down to the cathedral, in about 2
hours. On a tighter budget, the retro car panorama ride covers the viewpoints in 45 minutes for $17.
Good to know: St Nicholas Fortress, the UNESCO sea fortress, is not on any of these tours. It is
visited only on the official boat tour from the waterfront, in season: 5 May to 18 October in 2026.
Krka, on your own terms
There is no group day trip to Krka that starts in Šibenik with a track record, and you hardly need one: the Lozovac
entrance is 20 to 30 minutes by car, and local buses run to Skradin and Lozovac. The official all-sites ticket
covers Skradinski buk and the other land sites for the day, with the Skradin boat or the Lozovac bus included from April to
October. Swimming at Skradinski buk is not allowed.
Skradinski buk, the longest travertine barrier on the Krka.
Šibenik's lanes are at their best in the evening. The evening walking tour holds a 5.0 from 79 reviews,
and the medieval night walk goes down to the cistern of the four wells and the old streets that had no
lighting in the Middle Ages. Fans can swap either for the Game of Thrones tour.
Straight answers to what people ask most about Šibenik, Krka and Kornati.
Is Šibenik in Croatia?
Yes. Šibenik is a town in central Dalmatia, on the Adriatic coast of Croatia, where the Krka river meets the sea. It is the capital of Šibenik-Knin County, about 55 km from Split airport, and was first mentioned in a royal charter at Christmas 1066. Croatia has used the euro since January 2023.
Is Šibenik worth visiting?
Yes. It has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Cathedral of St James and St Nicholas Fortress, four fortresses, three of them on the hills above a compact stone old town, and Krka National Park about 15 km away. It is smaller and calmer than Split or Zadar, and the islands are a short ferry ride off the waterfront. More in is Šibenik worth visiting.
How many days do you need in Šibenik?
One day covers the old town, the cathedral and the fortresses. Give it two or three days to add Krka and a boat day to Kornati or the islands. The three fortresses tour fits the hills into 2 hours, and the Krka ticket takes half a day or more.
How do you get from Šibenik to Krka National Park?
Drive about 15 km to the Lozovac entrance, 20 to 30 minutes, and take the park bus down to Skradinski buk, or go to Skradin and take the park boat; both are included in the ticket from April to October. Autotransport Šibenik also runs regular daily buses to Skradin and Lozovac. Details in Krka from Šibenik.
How much is Krka National Park in 2026?
For an adult, all land sites: €7 from January to March and in November and December, €20 in April, May and October, and €40 from June to September, or €30 after 3pm in summer (Krka National Park price list). Children aged 7 to 18 pay less, and under-7s go free. The 2027 list keeps the same prices. See Krka prices 2026 and 2027.
Can you swim at Krka?
Not at Skradinski buk: swimming there has been banned since 1 January 2021 to protect the travertine. The park allows swimming only in marked areas elsewhere, and the ticket listing names Roški slap, Stinice and Pisak, from June to September. More in the Krka swimming rules.
How do you visit St Nicholas Fortress?
Only on the official boat tour from the Šibenik waterfront, by the Krka pier. In 2026 adults paid €19.50 in the spring and autumn and €27.50 from June to September, with the boat, an escort and a mobile audio guide included; the visit takes about 2 hours. The 2026 season ran from 5 May to 18 October. See the Šibenik fortresses.
Why is Šibenik cathedral famous?
The Cathedral of St James is built entirely of stone, vaults and dome included, with interlocking slabs and no wooden beams. Begun in 1431, finished in 1536 and consecrated in 1555, it blends Gothic and Renaissance, and a frieze of 71 carved heads runs round the apses. UNESCO listed it in 2000. More in the cathedral guide.
Can you do a Kornati day trip from Šibenik?
Yes. Excursion boats sail to Kornati National Park from Šibenik, Vodice and Murter, usually for a full day with swim stops. The Kornati speedboat tour leaves the Šibenik waterfront with up to 11 guests, and the park ticket is included. See Kornati and the islands.
Does Šibenik have beaches?
Yes. Banj beach is about 1 km from the centre, with a view back to the old town and St Michael’s Fortress. The Blue Flag sand-and-pebble beach at the Solaris resort is about 6 km away. For quieter water, take a ferry to Zlarin or Prvić.
Was Game of Thrones filmed in Šibenik?
Yes. In season 5, filmed in September 2014, the square in front of the Cathedral of St James stood in for Braavos. The Game of Thrones tour visits the filming spots with a guide, combined with a retro-car ride and a walk through the old town.
How do you get from Split airport to Šibenik?
Split airport is about 55 km away, 45 to 60 minutes by motorway. There is no direct public bus: change in Trogir or Split, or book a shuttle or a transfer. Intercity buses from Split take about 1 hour 30 minutes to Šibenik bus station, a 10-minute walk from the cathedral.
